Victory in Maine Would be Monumental, However Close the Vote

Andrew Sullivan is wrong in saying:
“I should say this about Maine. Whoever wins this vote will do so by the slimmest of margins. I don’t think it therefore represents much of a victory for either the pro-gay or anti-gay forces. It represents an essential 50-50 split. Maybe the coming results will alter that. But all [...]

On and On and On….

Here’s a story you likely know, at least in broad outline:
During his campaign, Obama promises progress on gay rights. Once in office, his rhetoric cools and — to be charitable — he doesn’t seem to be moving very fast. Then he makes things much worse with a dreadful brief his Justice Department files in defending [...]

Marriage Equality — Socialist?

Really, you can’t make some of this stuff up. Here’s a story about Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King’s view that  marriage equality is a…step towards socialism. Here’s the money quote (you can link to the full interview on this site, too):
If there’s a push for a socialist society where the foundations of individual rights and [...]

Not Seeing the Silver Lining, or Even One Atom of Element 47

Andrew Sullivan:
Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but one effect Obama has had on the right is to galvanize its small government, balanced budget wing and cool off the Christianist boilerplate. I haven’t noticed the tea-partiers going on and on about gays getting married for example, or cracking down on drugs.
I’ve been thinking about this since [...]

Rod Dreher’s “Trans”gression

I read Rod Dreher’s blog from time to time. Often I find his brand of religious conservatism both thoughtful and provocative. But then he posted this inanity:
If we accept that people who claim that they need to have sex reassignment surgery to make their bodies conform to who they believe they truly are, then on [...]

Robert Wright’s Idiosyncratic “God”

Robert Wright, who’s been blogging over at the Daily Dish in Andrew Sullivan’s absence1, has inspired a thoughtful debate about religion and atheism. In his last post, “End Times,” he criticizes the “new atheists” who are “anti-theists” — both non-believers and anti-religion. This criticism may surprise some readers of The Evolution of God, Wright’s carefully [...]

“What Happened in 1990?”: Almost Pitch-Perfect (but Not on “Queers”)

Read Andrew Sullivan’s recent essay (”What Happened in 1990?“) explaining the dramatic shift in public opinion on the acceptance of “homosexuality” that occurred in the early 1990s. Mostly, he’s as persuasive and clear as usual, especially on the vital role that the AIDS epidemic played in changing public perception of gay lives.
But then there’s this [...]

DOMA Defense? It’s Worse Than You Think

I returned from a pleasant afternoon away from work to find an unfolding horror story, detailed on my favorite blogs and news sources — the Obama Administration’s DOJ has just filed a motion to dismiss a legal challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (”DOMA”).
Whether or not the administration was legally required to do so [...]
